Top Cup Roasters is an online monthly subscription coffee subscription and a la carte business that Martyn and I started in January of 2020. We specialize in quality coffee from farmers in four growing regions and producers that value environmental sustainability and social justice measures like organic and bird-friendly farming, rain forest protection, human rights, living wages, and sustainable livelihoods for farmworkers.

Roasting coffee since 2007, we are dedicated to sourcing high quality single origins from each growing region of the globe. Top Cup’s hallmark is our meticulous attention to and love of the roasting process. All our offerings are humbly produced in small batches. Our business is focused on subscription coffees with weekly, biweekly, and monthly offerings and a la carte coffees that we deliver to you whenever you’re in need of a Top Cup. We hope you enjoy our latest cache.

We don’t skimp on quality or equity. We are constantly re-evaluating our practices and determining ways to improve and grow. With backgrounds in art, film, and music, we use our creative skills to package, market, and reimagine what a scrappy, DIY coffee business can look like while continuing to share part of ourselves with our customers and public. It’s how we keep costs down so we can continue to pay top dollar to farmers and builds a more personal touch into what we do. We started out only offering a couple of coffees but now have at least five coffees for purchase, multiple box sets, gift cards, mugs, and other ancillary products. By the end of this year, we hope to have two new drink options along with special gifts for our subscribers. We also plan on creating new membership perks that will continue to build on our community of customers and showcase our talents and those of others, particularly people from marginalized communities.

Keia’s story
My husband, Martyn, and I met 14 years ago at a party with a bunch of coffee industry people. I worked for years in coffee as a barista and manager for some of the most prestigious cafes in Portland and New York. Martyn, during that same time, was roasting and managing the backend of coffee businesses. We rarely saw people who looked like me on staff, let alone as the roaster or business owner. So together we started Top Cup just months before the pandemic hit in the winter of 2020. Our desire to start an online subscription coffee business could still happen but growing into our own roasting facility, and retail shop would have to wait a little while longer.
Martyn and I continued building the online business, working our full-time jobs, and finally, after 13 years together, got hitched. All of these acts were a revolution for us against the events of both the pandemic and the injustices that were highlighted in the Spring of 2020. With these events, we decided to transform Top Cup Roasters into a business with me as the face and roaster of Top Cup. This was our chance to finally showcase the work of people like myself in the coffee industry and to build a legacy by sharing a different narrative about Black women as roasters and owners. With his many years as a roaster, green coffee purchaser, and all-around Ops, Martyn has spent the last year mentoring and educating me on all aspects of roasting and maintaining operations of a roasting facility.
Now we find ourselves on the brink of something radical; fulfilling our plan of creating our roastery and retail space that is rooted in community, learning, and great taste. And we can do it with a little investment from you.
