In Kenya, Women provide 90% of labor on the coffee farm, but because they own less than 1% of the land, they mostly go uncompensated. As a third generation coffee farmer, I wanted to change that.
Kahawa 1893 gives back to women and females in Kenya who grow their coffee beans. They are a black women owned business with a social cause. Many other online, back owned food companies are out there, and find black owned small business food companies with online sales.
Kenyan coffee is the world’s most celebrated coffee for its rich flavor and distinctive taste. The coffee is grown at high altitudes in rich volcanic soil and farmers handpick only the ripest coffee cherries. It’s then carefully processed to reveal a sweet and clean balanced flavor. There is no other coffee quite like it. We source directly from women farmers and roast in California.
As a third-generation farmer, it’s my pleasure to share with you this delicious kahawa that’s been cultivated in Kenya since 1893.
Third-generation coffee farmer Margaret Nyamumbo started Kahawa 1893 to provide economic opportunities for women in Kenya who provide the majority of labor on coffee farms yet mostly go uncompensated because they don’t own the land.
By working directly with farmers, empowering women, and committing to transparency, Kahawa 1893 hopes to share the wealth. That’s a cup of coffee we can all feel good drinkin.
