As a child, I won multiple county level science fair competitions which gave me the opportunity to compete in multiple state science fair competitions, and learn to love science. From 6th grade to 9th grade, I visited Purdue University every summer for a week and a half to take part in Women In Engineering Camp, where my love for STEM was truly birthed. I planned on going to college to be a computer engineer, but because math was hard for me, rather than follow my heart, I changed plans and studied criminal justice. Unknowingly, these life passages became the root of Just Cakin It Mobile Cakery + Dessert Lab which led me to create the vision that brought it all together.
At 19, while studying Criminal Justice, I became a mother, which led me to seek the role of a substitute teacher, instructing high risk students in impoverished areas grades k-12. With so many students performing below grade level, I used my observations as the driving point for creating hands on, interactive educational activities that students would fully be receptive to while building intellectual confidence and learning life skills, rather than continuing the traditional partially receptive way of learning that most of us are used to.
Second, I served as a probation officer where I worked with both adult women and men. During this time in my career path, I observed that most of the clients that I supervised became criminals as the result of childhood trauma and lack of exposure to positive and creative outlets. I saw a need to apply practical educational lessons to real life prior to adulthood. I made it my duty to create something so powerful that it would effortlessly and in many ways, subconsciously sow seeds of happiness, practical knowledge and entrepreneurship skills early on in youth and serve as a deterrent to youth entering the criminal justice system.
Third, in May 2017, shortly after becoming a new mother of two, I realized that working in the criminal justice field was not conducive to motherhood at the time. Shortly after, my children & I whipped up our first batch of cookies and completely sold out. Shortly after, we created Treats By Barrett, then changed our name to B.B. + Co. Cupcakery. The creation of B.B. + Co. Cupcakery, allowed me to become a stay at home mother and teach my children the craft of culinary arts with a special focus on sweet treats.
I began to teach myself and my oldest the art which allowed me to obtain a job as an assistant bakery manager at Earthfare grocery store. With experience in a bakery, I learned how much science plays a big role in baking and how science even allows our taste buds to be able to thirst for more savory sweets.
In 2019, B.B. + Co. Cupcakery became Just Cakin’ It, where our mission was to reach youth at a place of acceptance and provide the space to learn, while sowing seeds of baking and culinary skills, science and life skills because this is the purpose it serves for my own children who are also fulfilled.
We are on a mission to bring entertainment to the Midwest & we need your help! Just Cakin’ It (formerly BB + Co. Cucakery) is a women owned and operated bakery created in 2017, by myself & my two daughters. Since opening, we’ve baked great things & catered lots of events.
