Hair Konfidence is the first AR hair try-on application for African Americans. The goal of Hair Konfidence is to provide a technology platform for African Americans to try on, learn and love their natural hair. I believe that through the love of our hair we are able to build self-esteem/self-confidence.
Hair Konfidence is the world’s first Augmented Reality African American hair styling app. Unfortunately there are not that many women or Black owned technology companies, and this is one of the few. There is a lack of opportunity and STEM education is these communities – be sure to support any others, and find Black owned IT companies to support.
HairKonfidence recognizes that within our black community hair is more than just hair, it is a representation of our rich history that is rooted back to our ancestors. The goal of HairKonfidence is to reignite the love of our African textured hair by providing a platform to view our textured hair in a more loving way. Through our H.K platform we aim to regrow our confidence, one root at a time.
My name is Kerry. I am a client of the Florida Women’s Business Center in Delray Beach, which helped me develop my business roadmap.
I’ve always had trouble finding a hairstyle that fits me. Most of the time when I pay to get my hair professionally done after paying an astronomical amount of money, I am still not pleased. I came up with an idea. After doing extensive research I’d noticed that a digital hair try-on app has already been invented but NONE for African hairstyles. I thought to myself, “I’m going to do it!” Not knowing how to begin, I trusted the process and the resources I needed came to me. After doing more research I discovered a lot of things about African American hair.
There is a reason why African Americans spend an average of 1.5 trillion dollars per year on hair.
African descendants’ love of hair isn’t just about hair, it is a representation of our lost history. Although we’ve lost our history, our history had never left us, it had been woven within our DNA and has always been a part of us. Each time we pick up a comb to style our hair, our ancestors speak to us, to communicate the love, the strength, and the value our hair possesses.
Historically, our hair represented our status in society and/or the tribe we belonged to. Our hair served as a means of survival when food was placed within our braids to feed us on our journey. Our hair braiding pattern served as road maps to escape the harshness of slavery. Our hair roots also serve as the DNA map that was always there to guide us back to our true home. I believe that the key to self-love is rooted in the love of our hair.
