I own a cake-decorating business. I mainly take orders via my website. Several years ago, I had an interest in learning more about cake decorating basics. So, I took a cake-decorating class and was so passionate that I was later asked to be the teacher of that same class. I taught for 3 years and decided to start my own business. Thus, Dessert First, LLC was formed using free grants in Michigan for MWBE businesses.
I love what I do and I offer custom-designed cakes for all occasions. I also love the amount of financial assistance in the forms of grants and loans that are offered for minority and women businesses in Michigan.
Meka’s story
Cake saved my life! I was in-between jobs and desperately seeking a career I was passionate about. I love to make people smile, which is why I began my small business of cake decorating. I started in a home kitchen, with limited space and resources. I sold at my local Farmers Market and developed a grass-roots following. Because of my loyal customers, my business has grown. I am now seeking a kitchen/building of my own and to do that, I need to hire employees, purchase equipment and inventory. It warms my heart every time I see a person’s face light up because I created something special–in my kitchen–for their celebration. The sacrifice is minimal and the reward is MAXIMAL!
