New York City and Philadelphia shops whipping up soft-serve creations for your eager bellies and our line of pints available all over the northeast USA.
New York and Philly based ice cream company Big Gay Ice Cream has been making over-the-top ice cream flavors since 2009. Besides being flavor pioneers, Big Gay Ice Cream also supports and give back to the Ali Forney Center, which helps place LBGTQ youth into safe environments.
Big Gay Ice Cream’s charitable mission is focused on supporting the local communities where our shops are located. We do this by supporting a wide range of causes including LGBTQIA+ organizations, animal shelters, homelessness and hunger initiatives, children and education, and more.
Through it all, Big Gay Ice Cream has never veered from its mission to keep the fun in ice cream. By mixing high quality ingredients with guilty pleasures, traditional flavors with the unexpected, & a youngster’s imagination with an adult’s knowing wink & satirical tongue, we spin a new take on the old school ice cream parlor experience. It’s both for kids & for those of us who are kids at heart.
The ice cream we serve in our shops sticks to the old-fashioned, soft-serve ice cream truck experience we started out serving on the streets of New York City. Is soft-serve “real” ice cream? You bet it is! The only difference is that soft-serve is frozen cone by cone & served at a warmer temperature, creating a more creamy texture. Our soft-serve is made the traditional way, using only all-natural milk, cream, sugar and a small amount of invisible emulsifier. We serve our own proprietary recipes & utilize milk & cream from an all-natural dairy farm in Pennsylvania.
The name has nothing to do with anything in particular. Yeah, the founders are gay. We’ve been “accused” of being straight and trying to cash in on… whatever. It’s all probably more “gay” in the old “happy” definition. Like I said, my first part of the truck’s mission was for me to go out there and be a grinning fool; to make every customer feel better about their lives for the time it took to eat an ice cream. Mission accomplished: GOURMET magazine called me “the happiest street food vendor in the history of street food” or something like that. The second part of our mission was to update the menu and create some great treats. I think we’ve done pretty well with that, too.
In our SHOPS our principal flavors are vanilla, chocolate, and a twist of the two (just like it was back in our truck days). However, we’ve now expanded that to include one or two special weekly flavors.
