Hakili Lab is a Mathematics learning Support Center that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to clearly understand students’ needs in Mathematics and design lessons to target each specific student’s needs. We teach, as an immigrant owned business, from the US using video conferencing and in person in Burkina Faso. In 2019, I read an article — “the education Crisis: Being in School Is Not the Same as Learning” — that the World bank published.

We are an EdTech that uses artificial intelligence to provide high quality coaching at a lower cost. Our goal is to help students of all races and ethnicities actually understand math, rather than memorizing rules they don’t understand. We firmly believe that most students can excel at math, provided the proper guidance is provided. Our approach as a black, immigrant owned business is focused on determining the actual level of the student, and coaching the student from his current level to bring him to the desired level. We are one of the many companies listed in this free directory of immigrant owned businesses.

It talked about how millions of students are benefitting from the effective use of technology in the more advanced countries while kids in developing countries like my home country aren’t. That’s when I started thinking “how can I help solve the education crisis?”

I was born and raised in Burkina Faso, a West African country with great challenges and opportunities in education. I was lucky to pursue my studies in the US after high school and came to the US as an immigrant, and later started this business. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Master of Information Systems Management, from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Economics, and from the Community College of Allegheny County with an Associate of Science in Mathematics and a Certificate of Business Management. As an immigrant, knowing my home country’s dire need for better learning support in schools, I am using my background in data science and technology to assess and clearly understand the students’ needs in Mathematics through standardized tests with classification algorithms. Then, with the help of motivated local teachers, I design a coursework tailored for each students.
