Built in 1866 in Houston’s Fourth Ward, these several blocks of the neighborhood feature original structures and handmade brick-paved roads laid by freed slaves, making up the largest intact freed slave settlement left in the nation—though it remains under threat of surrounding development.
Global recognition of historic Freedmen’s Town as the heritage district that transforms our understanding of Emancipation to be the story of freedom.
The Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that protects and preserves the history of Freedmen’s Town for the benefit of future generations. We support community engagement, re-education, and heritage tourism.

We’re back at it again! Today we wanted to introduce you to another one of our goals: Educate. In the eyes of Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy, Education looks like telling “The Story of Freedom” through the app, Emancipation National Historic Trail Study Act, supporting curriculum development, district-wide children’s tours and field trips, and so much more!
Our aim with education is to empower people so that they can become guardians of history! As we have stated many times before, the story and legacy of Freedmen’s Town is much bigger than many think. Freedmen’s Town connects to the Emancipation Trail, which connects to Juneteenth and stories of slavery. These stories are then connected to a much larger story of the Atlantic Slave Trade and the origins of enslaved Africans. With the preservation of these connections, we would be able to understand the movement of African peoples in the United States. We want to make sure people understand this
To preserve the historic legacy of Freedmen’s Town inspiring all through education and awareness of its unique story.
